The Rev. Father James Groenings, S.J., was a Jesuit priest and author of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In The Passion of Jesus and Its Hidden Meaning, he explains the significance of such Biblical events as the Garden of Gethsemane, St. Peter's denial, why Christ chose crucifixion, and many more, drawing from the Old and New Testaments. Father Groenings' work was originally published circa 1908 by the B. Herder Book Company, Missouri, as The History of the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ, with the Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur. It was also reproduced and published by TAN in 1987.

Classic Catholic Teaching

I read this book every year during lent. It was written in the late 1890's and translated and published in America in the early 1900's. So a couple of social concepts are obsolete (or maybe not) and the English is dated, but the teachings and insights are classic and Catholic. However, it is not a an easy read, and I feel one needs to read it thoughtfully and slowly to really let it sink in. I have found it to be very powerful and enlightening, and best of all it has helped me develop a better understanding of our Lord's suffering and passion. An excellent spiritual read.

I used this as a book for Lenten reflections, prayer and meditations. What I received was a very profound journey through Christ's Passion. The amount of suffering Jesus endured for us, was beyond human. There were times when the knowledge of what Christ was doing and why, had to be so
intense that only His true essence of God and Man could have allowed Him to go on. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to understand the reasons for Our Lord's deep sacrifice for us.

This book is a must read for anyone who feels that there should be more to a relationship with the Creator of the Universe. Tommy writes with an honest and insightful look into what it means to be a child/disciple/follower of Jesus Christ that only comes from one who has taken the path less traveled. Once I opened this book, I could not put it down... even though it convicted me in so many ways of how I have settled for less with my walk with Christ. I don't want to make it seem that this book is only for those who profess to be a "christian" because "we don't need another book here. I'm sorry. But let's have it right. Jesus' love and relationship is all we truly need"(p.25). This book would more be described as an alarm for everyone to awaken from the slumber of religion and to allow the love of God become our true nature and that love to be poured out into this world. Tommy may not write with an eloquence or style of a seasoned professional, but he does write from the heart and that is what you will hear when you read this. In fact, this is what I have found most endearing because never did I feel like I was reading but listening to a friend express the desire for a generation to rise up and embrace the calling as the Bride of Christ. A powerful read that I would recommend all to read and pass along to anyone who needs a fire lit inside to follow a supernatural love.

Challenging Viewpoints. Worthwhile Read.

I love that Tommy mentions in the introduction to the book that not everyone will agree with his views completely. Though there were some insights I was able to draw from, some of what he discusses I have a hard time agreeing with. It is still fascinating to learn what he believes and how he worships, even though it's very different than what I'm used to. So, for everyone thinking about reading this book, be aware that you may not agree with everything. Some of what you find in here may even challenge what you do believe. But it's still a worthwhile read, especially for all of the Sleeping Giant fans out there.

Great book for those with pain that can't be explained

This book was written by a physician who used this method to improve the lives of a family member as well as several of his patients. He informs you how to "retrain" your brain to make your body aware that it is no longer in pain. It seems too simple but it is extremely effective. If you have unexplained pain after a trauma this is the book to read.

Both repetitive and badly ended

If you've always felt Hamlet was a bit too blithe and devil-may-care for your taste, you might like Jerzy.

A considerable part of this book depicts Jerzy having the exact same self-pity parties about his being a slave, and going over the exact same ground every damn time he intentionally breaks one of the Commandments- even though he's done it many times before. Same reasoning each time. Same "Oh, Woe!!!" each time. Over and over again. I bet if these parts alone were cut out- maybe including 1 instance each- the book would a third shorter and a lot easier to read. It felt like filler.

Also filler was going over the exact same ground over and over again about the different kinds of magical wines, the rules about working with them, etc. I could see reminding us of these once per volume- but every 50 pages or so? At length?

The ending was all kinds of unsatisfactory. The plot arcs of the secondary characters- all more interesting and charismatic than Jerzy- were abandoned. Even Jerzy's arc- after saving the world or whatever- isn't clear. And Jerzy's resolution- I don't think it's a spoiler to say that it's all very, very mystical and combines all 3 types of filler I mentioned above.

This might be a SPOILER: said mystical ending apparently only happened because Jerzy mass-murdered all his slaves. This after he decides that a slave's job is to LIVE!!!! at least if that slave is him, apparently; for not-him slaves, well, everyone knows it's OK for them to get sacrificed. How delightful.

I've given it 2 stars because it is grammatically written and had no or few spelling errors- things I appreciate in fiction after reading too many novels that fail in these ways.

I don't recommend this, although if you've already read #1 and/or 2, you'll probably want whatever sense of completion you can get from this.

Weak ending with minimal side story arc conclusions

Disclaimer: I make wine; I really wanted to see something cool and interesting come out of the magic system and world in this trilogy. The author is on to something fantastic but she executed the trilogy poorly.

Overall (3 stars):
The third book in the trilogy, The Shattered Vine, bring the main story arc to a close (at least you have to assume it is closed). The evil Vineart from the Exiles and Jerzy go toe-to-toe to supremacy of the Lands Vin. The ending is a weak ending which leaves open items and resolves none of the bigger issues opened during the various books.

The action is centered at Jerzy's winery. The magic happens in the winery (which actually makes some sense). The side characters scatter to play their parts in the overall plan (not that they really know what the plan is... ).

Characters (2 stars):
The characters do not develop much at all in the last book. Jerzy just comes to grips with what he has known for a long time. The other characters just play out thier 2 dimension roles. It does make sense for the third book to focus on Jerzy's learning and experimenting with magic. Jerzy's views and development are expressed via internal monologue not conversation with the other characters -- he is very augsty, whiny and riddled with self-doubt. It gets tiresome very quickly.

Mileu/World Setting (3 stars):
The world setting is novel, interesting and has great potential. The use of grape vines species to concentrate the magic of the world (Gia references everywhere) is a novel magic system. However, the premise that there are only 6 types of vines is silly and weakens the concept from the start. The subtle ways of combining various grape varieties gives me an amazing set of ideas on who the magic systems could and should have been done.

I am not sure if the author is going to write more for this world or not. If she does, she really needs to speak with a winemaker about blending wines to show the power and creativity can be worked into this world.

The Mage-prince debate or "Absolute power corrupts absolutely" aka Machievelli
is brought up over and over in a vague way. The debates never really talk about the past horrors or the past good things that some mage-princes might have done.

Writing (2 stars):
The target level for the writing is probably a young adult age range. I wish the author had shot a bit higher. It would have helped the overall tone and structure of the world setting.

Story/plot (2.5 to 2.75 stars):
The plot was fairly predictable. Do not expect any great plot twists; the plot moves along at the same speed and level as the previous two books. The ending of the book was weak and not expanded upon. It will most likely leave the reader wondering...not something I am looking for in a fantasy novel.

Terrible last book! I would have like to say "So Sad to See It End" But it doesn't really have an ending?

Last book in a trilogy which should have been only one short story. Too many characters that go nowhere in this last book! Why go to all the trouble the author did in the first, second, and first two thirds of this last book to show who all the main characters are, and what they might be able to do, then nothing! Even the Vineart's future is left for the reader to guess!

This have been one of my major complaints about authors, finish the books or do not bother to start writing the books in the first time. The books turn out to be a waist of time and money to the readers who support these writers.

Michael E. Haskew has been writing and researching military history subjects for over twenty-five years. He is the editor of WWII History magazine and The World War II Desk Reference with the Eisenhower Center for American Studies. He is the author of West Point 1915: Eisenhower, Bradley, and the Class the Stars Fell On; Appomattox: The Last Days of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia; and Tank: 100 Years of the World's Most Important Armored Military Vehicle, among numerous other publications. He lives in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Good, but with room for improvement

First off, what you'd probably like to know is what specific vehicles are included in the book. The book is divided into two sections: Classic Tanks 1918-60, and Modern Tanks 1961-Present.

Included in the classic section: A7V, Mark V Male, Pz III, STG III, Pz IV, Char B1 bis, T34/85, M3A3 Stuart, M3A3 Lee, Churchill, M4A4 Sherman, Panther, Tiger I, Tiger II, Cromwell Mk VIII, JS-3, Centurion, T54/55, M48, M41, AMX 13, PT76, Saladin, M60, BTR60-PA.

In the Modern tanks section: T62, M113, Chieftain, M109, ZSU-23-4, Leopard I, S-tank, BMP 1, M551 Sheridan, Scimitar, Marder, AAV7, T-72, Ratel, Merkava, Leopard II, M1A1 Abrams, M2 Bradley, Challenger I, M270 MLRS, Warrior, M1A2 Abrams, Leclerc, T-90, Challenger II.

Thus, there's a good selection but some frustrating "no-shows" (e.g. BT series, T34/76, KV series, SU series, Matilda, Valentine, Pz I & II, Hetzer, Jagdpanther, all US TDs, Pershing...

In each case, a particular variant is depicted. There are good sized exterior front, top and side views in color, along with a color oblique with cut-aways. Some cut-aways are more extensive than others. A few are little more than "port holes" that reveal little of interest and provide little sense of the tank's interior layout. Contrary to what the product description seems to suggest, there are no interior cross sections. Bummer! There is generally at least one interior photo, but they're not always that revealing. (In fairness, the interior of a tank isn't exactly the easiest of photographic subjects!) There may or may not be some pictures of related vehicles.

The data provided in the specifications chart for each vehicle is somewhat variable. The basics are there. In many but not all cases, it will break down the armor by location. In many but not all cases, it will give ground pressure and fuel capacity. Generally, there is performance data, but it is more extensive in some cases than in others. There's no data on track width or turret ring diameter.

Bottomline: For its modest price, this is a pretty good book which supplies a pretty good amount of information about a fairly decent selection of tanks. I don't regret adding it to my library. However, I wish that it really did have scale interior cross sections for each tank even if just in black and white. OTOH, if you want to know a whole lot of technical detail about such-and-such a vehicle, you may want to look elsewhere. This is good, but it ain't Hunnicutt, Jentz, or Spielberger.

Perfect for the young general-to-be.

My grandson is of that age where things that shoot or go boom are fascinating. This book is perfect for him. It offers beautifully executed paintings and drawings of tanks and armored fighting vehicles from the very first to the latest. Fifty tanks and AFVs are profiled here. Each receives about six pages beginning with a two page spread featuring an illustration with some callouts and perhaps a partial cut-away drawing, followed by well rendered elevations, a short narrative and some photos. Typically, there is information on variants and fairly detailed specifications as well.

The paper is thick and the printing simply gorgeous.

All in all, this is not a book that will satisfy the avid military buff with a hunger for endless detail, but it is more than adequate for the casual reader or the young boy with dreams of leading great armies (which, hopefully, he will never have to do).

Lots of good info but major mistakes.

This book has some nice images, photos and good descriptions. Unfortunately I noticed some very bad mistakes.
In the Sheridan tank section it describes an M-60 tank as a M-551 Sheridan (p. 217). Hard to understand hence it is so easily identifiable. However the biggest error I found was in the M-1A1 tank section. It shows a photograph of the M-1A1 interior with a full detailed description. Well the problem is that is the interior of an M-109 SP howitzer which is completely different from a M-1A1 Abrams (p. 265). How can a well researched book describe M-1 tank components that don't exist in the photograph? It goes on to describe a "gunners controls", "auxiliary sight" and "turret basket" all which the image does not have. The M-109 does not have gunner controls or auxiliary sight as described in the image. Those are azimuth and quadrant sight controls. Also the M-109 does not have a turret basket nor is shown in the image. I find myself at a loss why such a well researched book has this mayor error. I really hope that the author did not intend to purposely deceive the readers. If a M-1's interior image was not available, I think it would be better not to add an image of another vehicle and called something else.
BTW I have been a crew member of both vehicles in the U.S. Army.

Supernasty

Should we blame the creator of Hannibal Lecter for the proliferation of incredibly all-seeing, all powerful villians who can only be undone by a similarly gifted (although damaged) hero. I can suspend belief for the sake of enjoyment as well as the next person but the back-of-mind voice saying 'oh come on' was almost too loud to ignore by the time I reached the final page of this schlock-horror opus

A stark, dark thriller

A great page-turning thriller from the creator of TV's CSI. I particularly like the concept of the digi-novel - short filmed scenes accessed through the website that help to bring the story to life. The basic premise follows the appropriately-named Steve Dark's hunt for the worst of the worst of serial killers - and the villain is suitably creepy.
