Very sick. Very funny

I read "The Horse Is Dead" when I was a kid in the 70s, because the guy who did the cover illustration for the original hardback edition was an old friend of my dad's, and we happened to have a copy in the house. I had very little idea of why it was so funny, but it was; rereading it now, it seems like a hardcore band covering a novel by Philip Roth. It's all there: the self-hatred, the obsession with sex, the worries about being Jewish, but Klane is so much faster, louder and angrier, and in so much worse taste.

It concerns one Nemiroff (we never learn his first name and he doesn't seem to think that he has one) who works as the only Jewish counsellor in a summer camp. (I learned of the existence of summer camps from this book.) He hates the kids he is in charge of, hates the camp, hates his fellow workers, and especially hates his luscious Gentile colleague Miss Booe (we never learn her first name either), because he knows she'll never go to bed with him. In the course of the book, he throws up in a girl's ear, has attempted coitus with a guitar (the girl who's wearing refuses to take it off, even in bed) and generally behaves like one of the most singularly repellent anti-heroes in contemporary American fiction. But it all changes when Miss Booe suddenly turns out to love Jewish guys...

"The Horse Is Dead" has been long out of print, and first editions are now extremely valuable. (Yay for my mum, who still owns one.) I gather Robert Klane has gone on to a successful cinema career. Good luck to him. This was a book years ahead of, or way to the side of, its time. Or any other time, for that matter.

greatest book ever....a way of life.....Ha!

I first got the book while attending San Fernando Valley State, Bill "Higgie Iggie", Higgins gave it to me. That was back in 1969! Hope you're still out there Bill. Took it with me to University of Heidelberg in Germany where it made its rounds there then it got passed on to some students at the Universidy of Berlin. I thought I'd never get it back. It finally did come back my second year there and it is now locked in my safe. I'll never let it go now! Truely a classic. After reading this how can anyone not laugh at life?! My only wish is that it were longer. Way too short, didn't want it to end. Get your hands on this one if you can.......

I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS BOOK FOR YEARS!!!

I didn't know who the author was, but every so often I'd type in "The Horse is Dead" into a search engine. I finally found it at Alibris, but they want 203 and 268 dollars for it.

I'm going to start hitting used bookstores. This book is a classic, and got me through a very trying time during my youth. I'm reminded of the book everytime I see that camp movie made with Bill Murray. Clearly, it's not as good as the book, though

Left my old copy where it would do the most good

It will be nice to have a new copy. Some poetry is so brilliant that the effort of fighting memorization is a fey pleasure; the flow seeps into places you didn't know were there. Speaking of the work of Sonia Sanchez, I found her late in life, and she reminded me of Ita Jones, who wrote The Grub Bag. A friend of mine, Carla Perry, author of Riva Beside Me, said something that guided me to Homegirls and Handgrenades, and here I am, on my second copy of MH. Why are all my other Sanchez books in tatters? Sit down for a week and I'll tell

Better yet, start reading anywhere. Here is good. Some of her work sets Lilies of the Field to music that can't be sung in this world without her words.

Gorgeous, moving book of haiku

Sonia Sanchez has written a book full of beautiful haiku. I’ve marked at least half of the 104 pages with one or more haiku that deeply moved me. Here are a few examples:

your death
a blues, i could not
drink away

in the beginning
when memory was sound. there was
bonesmell. bloodtear. whisperscream;

And plenty of beautiful poems of image and sound:

brownskinned
children dancing
with butterflies

your drums
soloing our breaths into
the beat . . . unbeat

I highly recommend the book. Though the subject matter is a thoroughly modern and lovely reflection of African American cultural influence, the emotional impact of Sanchez’s haiku/senryu style is quite similar to that of reading a Japanese haiku in the original.

Many English haiku writers simplistically write haiku in the 5-7-5 form because this is how it was first understood in English. However, Japanese words have more syllables than English words, so the effect of writing 5-7-5 haiku is English is wordy and diluted. Sanchez’s style is more true to the emotional impact by concentrating the impact of each haiku in 5-6 substantive words in most cases, while writing subject matter that is uniquely her own.

Great Concept, and I believe this is very important..

I can immediately sense a difference in my playing and my approach in less than a week. That being said, the book and the reader suffer from a complete lack of photographs or illustrations. It seems like such an easy and essential thing to include in a book about posture, and to this reader, it is dismaying that the author decided not to include this. If Mr. Kind does read this perhaps he might consider including access to a website with photographs of the essentials as covered by the book? Just my thought... but overall, the book is very good.

Ten times better than what I was expecting...

I was expecting a WWE/WWF fluff piece similar to most WWE-published biographies and books that I've read before, sprinkled with some stories, supposedly written by the superstars themselves but we all just KNOW the ghostwriter wrote most of it himself and liberally changed the facts as needed.
I was totally wrong here.
This book is fantastic. It pulls NO punches with anything, as the brothers are refreshingly honest throughout the entire book. It's obvious that whomever helped the brothers write this took a backseat and just recorded what Matt and Jeff had to say, and the result is an extremely interesting look at the wrestling business and how two fans managed to make it big in the business. I was also SHOCKED at how honest they were with everything. From being critical of their fellow wrestlers, to each other and their friends...the boys pulled zero punches here. The result is, in my opinion, the best book the WWF/WWE has had published since Mick Foley's two biographical books.
If you're a wrestling fan, you definetly want this. Non wrestling fans might not be as into this book as they may have been upon giving Foley's books a try, which is my only real criticism of the book itself, but then again the market is so saturated with wrestling biographies as opposed to when Have a Nice Day came out that one really cannot knock the book for this. But for wrestling fans, marks and smart marks alike, this is a wonderful book. For wrestling fans - my highest recommendation!

One of the best I have ever read

I have made it a goal in my life to actually read as many wrestling biographies as there are. No matter who it is or what its about. I choose to read them even if Im not a fan of the wrestler. Well Im not a big fan of the Hardy Boy Characters but I am a huge fan of what they can do. They can bring a unique style of wrestling to the ring and this is definently a good book.

When I picked up this book I couldnt put it down. I honestly read it in 2 days it was so good. Mind you I only had to put it down to watch wrestling and go to school. Other than that I was reading this book and it was one of the most interesting things I have ever read. The book details on how the Hardys grew up and how they started with there own little promotion. It tells about the good times and the bad times.
I love the aspect of the book on how instead of being one long read its more of a script. You get to hear the story from both Matt and Jeff's thoughts and its interesting to see where they agree and where they dont.
I insist to everyone out there who is a wrestling fan that they need to pick this book up. Trust me you wont be dissapointed.

Awsome Book

This was probably the best wrestling book since Mick "Mankind" Foley's books came out. This not typical WWE thick and through like the last few books. This book did not dissapoint at all.
I never realized all that Matt & Jeff went through to become WWE superstars.
They were totally honest from relationships out of the ring to Jeff losing his passions/becoming burnt out of the wrestling book.
Both Hardy's have become 2 of my favorite wrestlers after reading this.
If you are thinking of purchasing a wrestling book I would suggest this one.
I originally got this for my sister since she loves the Hardy's especially Jeff but I ended finishing another book and just wanted to read a few pages and I wound up reading this book in 2 days.

Large Book Nice Paintings,But Don't Believe All You Read

I have wanted to read this book since it came out,because of the bizarreness behind it, just couldn't find it for a long time and when I did, the price was way more than I wanted to spend. I got a great buy on this one. It has lots of nice photos in it and pictures of many drawings and paintings the author did of Jimi after his death.
I don't take much truth in the book after earlier reading from several sources that the author just barely knew Hendrix and was not engaged or anything else to him.It's a sad story all the way around. In fact from later evidence, Hendrix was murdered by his manager and Monika had to stick with her story in order to keep alive herself although she later "committed suicide" after she was exposed in court by his ex girlfriend Kathy who knew there was more to the story.Doing some investigation into his death will open many people's eyes to what really happened, as it wasn't just a case of him choking on his vomit that killed him.It's a sick horrible story and it should have had the case reopened and investigated further, even though the culprit (Mike Jefferies) who killed him died later on.There's too much evidence/facts behind his murder and this book is a very bizarre tale written by someone who didn't know him very well, but just to cover her own involvement in his murder. Jimi needs justice and hopefully one day it will be done.
It does though makes a nice coffee table book and good for those who have a collection of Hendrix memorabilia..

I intensely dislike Monica. Some people like her paintings but I am unable to be objective. I've heard the book will be worth some money someday but since I know she had a hand in Jimi's murder, I can't recommend this book. She opened the door for the murderer and then disappeared. Psychopath comes to mind.

A passionate, heart-melting romance with a home-town feel featuring a swoon-worthy fireman!

PIN-UP FIREMAN by Vonnie Davis is a mega entertaining, sexy romance! I will warn you that you should have some fire extinguishers on hand while reading it! AND I would be remiss if I did not mention the cover! Love the sexy abs and chin stubble! Mmmmm!

PIN-UP FIREMAN is the third book in the author's Wild Heat series but each of the books in this series can be easily enjoyed as standalones. I first discovered Vonnie's books through her funny and sexy Highlander's Beloved paranormal series which features hunky bear shifters and a small, but mighty, pinked-out grandma. I can attest that Vonnie's firemen in her Wild Heat series set some hugely delicious fires of their own. As proof, once I started PIN-UP FIREMAN, I couldn't put it down until I'd read the last sentence, swooning much of the way. PIN-UP FIREMAN is the story of Attorney Graci-ella Santana and Fireman Boyd Calloway.

I know when I pick up one of Vonnie's books that I will be indulging in a sexy story overflowing with humor. I highly recommend PIN-UP FIREMAN to anyone who enjoys passionate, heart-melting romances with a home-town feel featuring swoon-worthy firemen!

I just love Vonnie Davis! THis book had my laughing out loud, wanting to slap someone, and had my hear melting by turns.

Gracie-ella was a great character. A photographer at heart, but a lawyer to appease her parents, she has so much to give but is stuck thinking she's second best.

Boyd is a single dad embroiled in a custody battle. Believing he needs to stay squeaky clean in all aspects, including romance, he tries to resist Gracie-ella but to no avail.

Their romance is anything but smooth sailing. Between ex-wives, psycho firefighters, a precocious little boy, and two old farts (and I mean that literally lol) they have help and hindrance galore. I enjoyed every moment. It will keep you on the edge of your seat and rooting for Boyd and Gracie-ella to finally get it together.

Hot Fireman

I LOVED this book. It had me from the beginning and I couldn't put it down. The thing I absolutely loved was the humor. I lost count of the number of times I laughed out loud while reading. The characters are quirky, but so much fun! If you're looking for a book to put you in a great mood look no further. You can't go wrong with a yummy fireman you know he brings the heat. Graci-ella is not thrilled with her job, but she does what she has to. Her love is photography and she does a charity firemen calendar. Boyd is in the mist of a custody battle for his son and he has put women on the back-burner that is until Graci-ella walks into his life. Now will he take the risk when the reward is so worth it?

I got this book as a required text for a class I took, it is jam packed with alot of beneficial information, and my former teacher wrote parts of it, which I thought was neat.

Good collection of essays. Could use a stronger theoretical foundation to support arguments, in addition to all of the research and case studies. Also, not useful for in-service teachers looking for solutions and strategies. Definitely an academic pursuit.

wish fulfillment

Ah, where to start? Charlotte's writing is funny, searing, endearing, emotional. This book is a delightful rollercoaster, a bundle of humanity and joy and angst and best of all, wish fulfillment.

Now, Charlotte wrote a Get a Grip blog about why it's ok to enjoy Twilight, as it's entertaining wish fulfillment fiction for women. Hot young blonde hotties for paunchy old men has long been standard fantasy fair, so I get my vampire boyfriend, no harm no foul, if I may paraphrase. I heart her for this simple point.

So too do I heart Addicted for the same reason. Charlotte's heroine is something of a whirlwind of neurotic worry and low self esteem - but not in the way Bridget Jones is. With Bridget (and yes, also Bella Swan) you finally start believing in their endless self criticism and wondering why handsome men ARE interested in them at all if they're so useless. Stein's heroine Kit is full of worry but she's incredibly human and sympathetic. Also the book starts with her dynamic attempt to find what she's been lacking and she embarks on what might be termed a 'voyage of sexual discovery' if that didn't sound so cheesy. What she does is fearfully fling herself into a panicked and enthusiastic push-pull clinch with Dillon Holt, who may or may not be a sex addict.

This is where the wish fulfillment comes in - not everyone may completely identify with Kit (I do!) who has had an unsatisfying sexual experience up til now but Dillon must complete everyone's wish to get done just right by a really skillful muscly man who knows exactly what they need, somewhat telepathically. I love it. Their sex is touching, spontaneous, arousing, full of pathos. Kit is a bit clumsy, a bit self-conscious, you may not be like that (I am!!), and while she may not be the typical perfect heroine, her enthusiasm and warmth and bravery are charming and inspiring. This book is so human. It's so good for imperfect people, it's like a little bible of encouragement. Dillon is a little too good to be true, but that's who we want to read about. He's the good guy. He's strong enough and big enough to make a girl feel little. Oh, god, Dillon, please heft me around the place a bit too. And he's vulnerable.

Stein keeps the tension going right til the end of the book, and while the resolution is extremely satisfying, the little epilogue attaches to the end with a really perfect little twist.

I enjoyed every second of this book, and the book within the book. It was such a pleasure to read. It's really funny. It's edge of the seat reading. It's really arousing. The characters are completely sypathetic and their dialogue is natural and convincing. This would make a lovely film, actually - I would enjoy every moment of that too.

Addicted to.... um?

First off, I am such a huge supporter of Charlotte Stein. I think I have every one of her books/novellas. I therefore obviously love Charlotte's writing style. I don't read them for the sex scenes, but rather, for the intense emotional journey she takes us on. I've had this one on pre-order for ages and opened it up on my kindle with every intention of loving it.

I'm sorry to say Addicted was not my favourite by Charlotte. I've read it twice in the hopes that I could work out the answers to some of my questions/confusions but am still at a bit of a loss.

Here are some of my thoughts.

- I didn't understand why Dillon was at the Sexual Healing support group given his later revelation. It made the set-up feel a bit forced, and I definitely don't know why Kit went along rather than doing what most shy people would do: research on the internet in forums, etc. In not understanding the set up, I don't understand the overall theme of the book 'Addicted'.

- Wish I could have seen more of their lives outside of each other. Why give him such an interesting job at Oceanworld if we only get two lines about it? I was also interested in Kit's job, but it also felt unreal to me, but I suppose that was because I saw her there once and she wasn't doing anything very 'librarian-y'. The whole shy librarian thing felt a bit cliche'd. I'm sure many, many librarians are confident extroverts!

- Addicted was very heavily into Kit's POV, including her insane ramblings and "JD from Scrubs inner monologues" (hee hee, enjoyed that comparison) but it got to be too fatiguing on the reader at times. A lot of Charlotte's heroines are bumbling, self doubting dorks (the exception being Madison in Control, my favourite of Charlotte's books by far). I don't know exactly why Kit was this way.

- I am not religious in any way, but I felt the church scene was very unnecessary and I don't know what it was attempting to accomplish. Perhaps it was an example of how adventurous she had become? I was uncomfortable reading it.

-Is Dillon now at peace with what happened in his past, and will he return to that line of work?

As you can see I've got more questions than answers and therefore I have to score Addicted a slightly generous 3/5. I don't know if I see a future for these characters but it had some seriously great moments too. I don't want to come off as totally negative with this review. I still devoured this book, it had my complete attention, I felt all the emotions, the sex scenes were explicit yet with no squick factor.

Charlotte, I adore you, I will always buy what you write, and hopefully this was of some use to you as constructive feedback as I put a lot of thought into this.

It isn't often a reader can get hot sex, romance and a storyline that keeps your mind as engaged as it does your sex drive. Addicted is such a book
Set in modern day London, the story revolves around Kit Connor, the archetype mousy librarian with the soul of a sexual dynamo underneath a drab exterior. What makes Kit different is her unpublished manuscripts, one of which is an erotic novel.
Thinking she needs to learn about sexual dysfunction to hone her erotica writing craft, and perhaps discover some dysfunction within herself, Kit joins a sexual support group where she meets Dillon.
Kit is immediately drawn to Dillon, despite his admission of sexual addiction, He is irresistible to her, he is in fact the substance to which she becomes addicted.
To give any more of the plot here would be a spoiler. Suffice to say, there is sex, explicit and very well written. But there is also a story of two people who think themselves damaged, and the healing process they embark upon.
As a rule, I am loathe to even consider books that can in any way be described as a romance. The Happily Ever After genre does not interest me, neither does the "beautiful but doesn't know it" heroine, or the "handsome confident lead male," which Stein does use.
Kit's lack of confidence in her body will ring with women with body image issues. I personally related to Kit's image of her physical self, and the shock of discovering that, just maybe, she isn't quite as unattractive as she considers herself.
Stein draws realistic characters and wonderful scenes. Being in Kit's head is often a stream-of-consciousness, a thought process a lot of women will understand and relate to.
Addicted is steamy hot, but also funny and, as much as I hate to use the word, poignant. Once again, Charlotte Stein has proven herself one of the premier erotica writers of our day.

The clinical conditions in Part 3 are not treated as separate entities but are divided into groups whose principles and approaches are linked. Each of these subsections in Part 3, therefore, is introduced by a chapter which sets the scene for the way in which the conditions may be considered. The clinical chapters in Part 3 are nearly all written by clinically practising senior occupational therapists, while Parts 1 and 2 have been written by those whose experience lies in education and management.

About the Author
John Coughlin, also known by his Internet handle Dark Wyccan, has been involved in the craft for over 16 years. In that time, he has worked with several groves and covens, although he primarily prefers to walk a solitary, eclectic path.

Also associated with the Gothic scene, John has incorporated his personal aesthetics and ideals into his spirituality giving him an often unique perspective on Wicca and Paganism in general.

Currently, John is Editor of the NYC Pagan Resource Guide and has created many other web-based projects for both Pagans and Goths on waningmoon.com such as the Pagan Personals, Gothic Personals, Corporate Goth and Gothic Guide to Nail Care.

Awesome! A must Read!

I learned about the existence of this book just as I was desparing that there were no good intermediate or advanced pagan books out there. "Out of the Shadows" was everything I was looking for and more. As someone who has long been attracted to dieties with darker, less nurturing aspects like Sekhmet, Kali, and Coyote, I agree that this book was much needed in presenting paganism without the "good vs. bad" dualism. The left hand path is often misunderstood, and I think this book is a wonderful introduction to it. It is a very psychological, thought provoking view. One will find no pre-made spells or rituals here; Coughlin explores the philosophy and mechanics of magic to help you understand why they work. -Quite a liberating thing!
It is also a joy to read; I really enjoyed the conversational style of writing that Coughlin used. He defines and clarifies several aspects of dark spirituality/goth subculture that I would not normally have read about, such as Vampirism and Satanism. He also goes into depth about subjects that would never see the light of day in other books: blood, pain, insanity, sex magic, curses, and drugs. Always there, though, is a reminder of the need for balance and responsibility. The final chapter on haunting was superb; it made sense of the hauntings that I have experienced and caused me to see them in a new way. This book tops my list of favorite pagan books; I reccomend it to everyone who can handle the subject matter and wants a full course meal in magic.

Dark Paganism from Out of the Shadows

In Out of The Shadows, author John J. Coughlin trys to

rebuild the balance 'Light Paganism' has created. He

gives an easy and understandable description of what

the Darkness and 'Dark Paganism' actually are. Though

the focus of this book is 'Dark Paganism', the author in

no way tries to deny or degrade Light Paganism. In

fact, Coughlin actually describes it's benefits and

necessities in modern paganism.

In his explanation of the Darkness, Coughlin gives

information on "dark siders" including the Gothic and

Vampiric Sub-Culture. He gives a clear and understandable explanation of "The Shadow" in psychological terms, as well as symbols, images, and archetypes associated with darkness. I found the section on dark deities to be especially interesting,

where Coughlin offers information on specific deities

from various pantheons including Celtic,Egyptian,

Greek, and Hindu.

Part Two is an explanation of the nature and structure of magick. This section explains how and why magick works as well as it's limitations and psychological factors. Coughlin takes you through each step of the

spellcasting process by describing what and how to conduct ritual. This section also contains information on psychic abilities, chaos magick, and sex magick.

Out of The Shadows is really two books in one.

It is and exploration of Dark Paganism, but it is also

a guide to magick. Because so many books are focused

on Light Paganism, this text is truly ground breaking.

This book does an excellent job of providing the

seeker with the proper tools to explore yourself. It's

goal is to suggest, if not test, you to personalize

your belief system. You will learn the truth about the Darkness and Dark Paganism. It was an excellent read and I'd

highly recommend it to all Pagans.

Excellent book that will get you thinking

What I like about this book is the author's upfront honesty. this is a book about magickal theory and exploring your dark side. The author never sets out to do a book that's focused on practice. He wants you to critically think and explore the concepts that he touches on, but in a manner that I believe gives a lot of respect to the reader.
