I LOVE This Book!

The cover is beautiful. The pieces are easy to read. I have the best of both worlds because I can practice my flute playing as well as my piano playing. The flute notation is written above the piano notation. I'm going to have a lot of fun with this book. The first piece is very easy and the pieces progress from there. It includes the following composers: Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, and Schumann. I can't wait to get started. I intend to get a really good workout with this book. I'm excited!

UPDATE: I forgot to mention that there is a flute insert. This allows the flutist to play using the insert. The pianist can use the book that has the flute notation on top. Therefore, you can play as a solo flutist, or with a pianist. The notation on the flute insert and the book is large. Now...that's just the way I like it! It's beautifully done and you will LOVE it. I will use the book to practice the piano. Then I can record the piano parts and play the flute with the piano in the background. Boy...am I going to have fun!

40 Little Pieces for flute

This is a good book with pieces presented easy to less easy (none of them are really difficult). It would be good for a beginner wanting to progress to intermediate level. The most difficult piece in it is Serenade by Haydn (or Hoffstetter, depending on who you believe), which I played for a music competition while still in high school band. I bought this book because I had not played in many years and wanted to get back into it. For that purpose, it was fine. It would be a good companion to Flute for Dummies. Appropriate for someone just learning or re-learning after a long layoff. But this is not a book for someone who has been playing for a few years; too elementary.

This is not a novel, it is a non fiction book comparing and contrasting myths and legends about unicorns. I have not finished it yet, and I have enjoyed this series of books so far (wizards, fairies, vampires, dragons and mermaids), but it has some interesting facts about the unicorn lore. Some is fluff, but there was some real research involved and overall, I have really enjoyed it.

Beautiful, fun book!

This book arrived in excellent condition. I have not read it fully only flipped through paragraphs. I purchased this for my step daughter. We have the mermaid as well. She loves it! I'm sure she will love one as well.

Just a warning. Some of these books have aspects of them that are not suitable or easily under by children I would recommend them for preteens and upward. For younger kids, just read book to them and censor the parts you feel may be above their understanding.

This is a lovely little book about unicorns! It gives lots of information about unicorn myths in various countries, animals that could be mistaken for unicorns, and unicorns in Christianity. The book has great sepia illustrations and tons of quotes. It also talks about The Last Unicorn and Legend as well as other books and movies unicorns appear in. One of the best books on unicorns I've ever read.

I read Transpharmation is a way to look into how a very 'old school' industry is coming to terms with the 'new media' way of doing business. I'm all about brick 'n mortar to tech-savvy business owner and Sztar has done a great job in bridging that gap for the reader, while at the same time making the 'move', 'change', or whatever you want to call... it an easy to grasp possibility.

Really good environmental history

David Pietz has provided a superior history of water management in northern China. In spite of the "modern" in the title, he spends over 100 pages on a notably judicious and incisive history of water management from prehistory on down to Qing. He provides some really fascinating lore on water engineering in the 1930s, usually a decade rather shorted by environmental historians. He then settles down to the long and complex history of water management under Mao and the later Communist leaders, ending with problems for the future. China is notoriously not only short of water but prone to epic droughts and floods, but the story of what the Chinese have done with that is the exciting narrative. (It is pretty well summed up by a Chinese saying: " Freezing to death, stand straight and face the wind; starving to death, never bend.")
What is special about this book is Pietz' sensible, judicious, and informed take on key issues, from the rise of irrigation 3000 years ago to the controversies over big dams today. In an age of rather overheated rhetoric about China (pro and con) this is refreshing; more to the point, it makes this book particularly valuable.

I add a few comments to Anderson's excellent review: Pietz places 20th century water management in the Yellow River nicely in the context of modern reservoir construction worldwide, beginning with the Tennessee multipurpose model--energy production, flood control, irrigation, regional development. There is an insightful discussion of a much debated current issue: increasing flow in the Yellow by importing water from the Yangtze, hundreds of kilometers to the South. Problems arising as reservoirs age, such as the buildup of sediment, are covered, so is the emerging impact of climate change on river water volume. A Great book for Datsun lovers!

How To Modify Your Nissan/Datsun OHC Engine was recommended to me when I my husband and I bought my 1968 510 Datsun SCCA race car. The instructions for performing various disassembly/assembly tasks are clear, with a complete parts break-out for every task covered.

This is the only Datsun modification book we own, and I can't imagine needing any other one.

Great for getting unstuck

This book provides a lot of encouraging reframes for people who have encountered failure and are a bit lost as to how to move forward. They offer a different way of living life by redefining success and how to attain it. One of my favorite dysfunctional beliefs they share is "I need to figure out my best possible life, make a plan, and then execute it." What? That's a dysfunctional belief? But that's what I've been doing and what I've been told to do. Make your goals and then a plan of execution. However, it hasn't worked for me. I haven't found success and more importantly happiness by following this advice. The reframe they offer for this dysfunctional belief is "There are multiple great lives and plans within me, and I get to choose which one to build my way forward to next." If you're ready for more happiness, more relationships, less regrets, and more fruit for your labor, you will find unique guidance in this book to get there. Be prepared to unlearn concepts and adopt new ones, engage in personal reflection, and talk to a lot of people! This is not a feel good book, but it offers a guide to follow that if implemented will make you feel better.

Authors did a good job in creating a new framework to self-exploration. Most important, one can never have enough self-analysis tools in their life toolbox. Unfortunately, the downfall of the book were anecdotes of millennials and people under 40. There was not one example of anyone over 55 or the so called "ENCORE" population.

I find the five mind-sets described in the book are quite powerful tools. In short, (1) To get unstuck, take progressive actionable steps. (2) To identify what these steps are, try to take different perspectives and come up with ideas for trying. The essence is: Action. If stuck, reframe and action again. Life/career is a journey, so focus more on the process instead of the final result.

Chapters cover battements, rotary movements of the legs, the arms, poses of the classical dance, connecting and auxiliary movements, jumps, beats, point work, and turns as well as material for a sample lesson. Diagrams show clearly the exact foot, leg, arm, and body positions for the proper execution of many steps and movements. The result is a fundamental theory of dance that offers dancers, teachers, and ballet lovers information often difficult to locate in other books.

giving good insight into the Russian Classical Ballet school

Classic of classical ballet. A small book, old-fashioned little drawings, but all is explained. I had this one growing up, and now got it for my daughter. It contains everything from basics to more complicated positions, so one uses it differently as one advances through the art.

Great when combined with other resources

Because my own dance education was rather inconsistent (spent time under teachers who each used Cecchetti, Vaganova, Balanchine, and Neumeier methods), i ordered this book to help me once i myself began to teach. After reading it, i will forever be a Vaganova fan. Her method is, well, methodical. Very detailed, well-thought out and well-planned. It's easy to see why she was so successful. My first struggle was that some of the names of steps she uses are now archaic, so i had to do some research to figure out what she was talking about! I also found this book more helpful when combined with another book, called The Perfect Pointe System, which was developed by a dance physiotherapist in Australia named Lisa Howell. Vaganova's way of teaching artistry is excellent, but i found it necessary to incorporate more modern/scientific ideas about how to use the muscles safely and effectively, which is where Lisa Howell's book came in. I also bought this book together with 100 Lessons in Classical Ballet, which showed how to fit Vaganova's thoughts into an actual lesson. Put together, i definitely learned more from reading these three books than from all my years of "dance education" combined!

Six years in the making, this book is the product of many, many, personal
interviews, telephone calls, and e-mails with over fifty of River Phoenix's close
friends, fellow actors, directors, photographers, fellow cult members, drug
companions, lovers, and a few members of the Phoenix family. Their recollections
give us some profound insights into River's real life. I traveled thousands of miles to interview many people and to witness the
sounds and sights [and sites] that River Phoenix, himself, experienced.
I visited his birthplace in Metolius, Oregon, his homes and favorite haunts
in Gainesville and Micanopy, Florida, as well as film locations in Portland,
Oregon, and Nashville, Tennessee. In Montezuma, Costa Rica, I had an enjoyable
telephone conversation with his father. I visited San Francisco and Hollywood,
California, where I descended into the bowels of the Los Angeles city archives,
five stories below the street.
River has become more popular now than when he was a celluloid presence.
This complex person calls from beyond the grave to say, "There was more to me
than Hollywood."
�The book is built from research in: over four hundred newspaper and magazine articles; fifty-four
television shows, specials, documentaries, movies, and videos; twenty-two books; Internet sites�and the recordings of more than fifty songs from around the world.
I must also recognize the work of fellow authors who previously wrote about
River: Grace Catalano, Brian J. Robb, Penelope Dening, Penny Stempel, John
Barker, and John Glatt. Their writing has inspired me, and they were invaluable
references in the creation of this book.
The real names of people and places are used in this book. In most cases,
people I interviewed have approved what is written about them; a few asked
that their identities be changed, and I have complied with their requests. I have
also changed some names in order to protect innocent children. This in no way
affects the accuracy of the story of River Phoenix's complex and fascinating life.This book is not about the death of River Phoenix. It is a compilation of my
search for the truth: a chronology and a correction of the record. It is a celebration
of all the aspects of his human life.

"Search" has found what others have missed...

A River Phoneix fan since my preteen years, I was sure I knew all there is to know about this talented actor. I purchased the book more to add it to my collection than anything else. Imagine my surprise to find that this is not only well written, but also features many interesting and little known factoids for even the most dedicated River Phoenix fans.

If you're looking for a book that focuses on nothing more than River's untimely death and all things bad and gruesome with the world, this book isn't for you. "Search" focuses on the LIFE of River Phoenix, from childhood to adulthood. It will become obvious to the reader that the author has unparalleled respect both for River himself and his memory. A very pleasant read for those of us who know there is more to River Phoenix than meets the eye.

Learning about how the river flows

I think this is the best and most informative book about River I have ever read. The author shows a great interest in River, he wrote this well-researched book over some years.

And the spiritual aspect about River's life doesn't come too short too which I found especially interesting.

By reading this book I gained a better picture about who River was, what his character was like, how he communicated and how lovely he was.

I have actually no words about how much this book helped me understand him. This is a fantastic book and it brought River closer to me, it will keep his memory alive over the years and that's very important. That way things about him will always be documented and the whole world will be able to find out who River was. "You can learn a lot from a river." - Hermann Hesse

This book shows me the way of a river until he flowed into the ocean and fulfilled his fate, the dissolving. But we can follow him along the way and still be with him. And when it rains, heaven cries us a River. I love this book.

Best book about River Phoenix

When River Phoenix died of a drug overdose, the world did not only lose a great actor but a person who in retrospect disappeared behind his roles and image. Little remained of the teenager who spoke openly against drugs, promoted vegetarian food and a peaceful existence between man, animals and all cultures on this planet. Fans and non-fans alike felt betrayed as it slowly turned out that Phoenix had died of a drug overdose and that he had apparently been taking drugs for at least the last 3-4 years of his life.

Phoenix started his career at an early age and died very young, at just 23 years of age. Every person changes a lot between early childhood and early adulthood but Phoenix was not allowed to change, at least not publicly. But of course he changed as we all do and when his change came into the eye of the public so harshly and suddenly, he got jumped on and crushed.

The 3 or 4 available biographies about the actor dwell on his downfall. Barry C. Lawrence at least tries to give a comprehensive view about the life of River Phoenix and to remain as objective as possible. But still as with every biography about a famous dead person the person comes alive through the vision or the memories of others and we probably all know how distorted that view gets over the years, so what kind of a person River Phoenix was, he took that with him in his grave or simply put, he was as complex and multi-layered and confused and excited and happy and sad as we all are through our lives and in his death he becomes even more than during his lifetime a projection of the various emotions of all of us.

No book about the actor can give you the truth. Not even when Joaquin Phoenix would break his silence and talk about his brother would you get the truth. Only the truth according to the memory of Joaquin Phoenix, so I do not like that promotional tool, the truth about River Phoenix. There is no truth only interpretation. But Barry C. Lawrence interpretation is a good and comprehensive one and the interpretation of someone who tried to understand a life that was so far away from anything resembling normalcy.

It is apart from that a good read. It is fluently written and takes you along the journey of River's short life through his various movies, charity work and his musical accomplishments. But although Lawrence tries to enhance all the positive aspects of Phoenix life and how much he positively influenced others, nothing can lighten up the fact, that a promising human being threw away his life. I write life not career. Phoenix threw away the beauty of sorting himself and his life out and to simply turn older and wiser. And still after all these years I can't help thinking what a shame!

About the Author
Duccio Bonavia held professorships at Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Universidad Nacional San Cristobal de Huamanga (Ayacucho) and at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (Lima), before he retired in 2005. He served as the Assistant Director of the Museo Nacional de Arqueolog�a y Antropolog�a de Lima and has written fourteen books, including Peru: Hombre e Historia, Mural Paintings in Ancient Peru and The South American Camelids.
