Really fun, beautifully written, and hilarious!

This book by Patrick E. McLean was awesome. I listened to the audiobook narrated by the author. He is a fantastic narrator. His delivery of all the characters' lines were so good. He got the voice for the protagonist perfectly. The wizard and an interesting Orc character - I distinctly remember them all and they were unique and interesting voices that really brought the story alive and made the fantastic dialog shine. Now onto the story.

I really enjoyed the story. I was never bored, which sadly I can't say about many novels. First off, I love adventure stories. This was an adventure story that was very different. You can tell by the title. What? A merchant going on an adventure? Yes. But he's what you might expect from Patrick, a character who uses his brains and wit to get what he wants. He's not swinging a sword. He's not out for glory. He never set out to be a hero.

As much as I love fantasy for all its tropes, it was refreshing to read a story with a very different kind of protagonist. The wizard was a great character too. A bit of what we expect except when it comes to his personality. He was a fun antagonist.

Another great thing about this story is that I was never able to guess what was going to happen next. In a way that Boltak the main character might say it: "This ain't your ordinary fantasy adventure kid." Something else I liked was the prose. Usually it was snappy witty dialogue that had me laughing a lot. Sometimes, however, there were remarkable phrases elegantly describing things of beauty. More quiet moments where you weren't waiting for the next laugh but carefully reading or listening to each word. When you get to chapter 37 you'll see what I mean. Great writing. So I gave this novel a 5 star rating because it was a blast to read, had fantastic writing, and I'm really glad I gave it a go.

Snarky Fantasy? I. Love. It.

I don't know where to start. I have loved almost everything that has come from Patrick McLean. I saw this appear in a random search and thought 'this can't possibly be what I think it is!'
The stage for this book is set in a Medieval town where heros are more muscle than gray matter, and every cliche that you can think of is heaped upon them to hilarious effect. The knight is even wearing Shining (trademarked) Armor. I kid you not.
I laughed continuously for the first 50% of the book or so. The third quarter gets a little weighed down by philosophical questions about 'who is a hero' and 'what makes you happy' but recovers in fine form. The plot goes place you wouldn't quite think either. I don't want to spoil anything, but when the story takes turns they are out of left field.
The characters are what really makes this book though. You have your main character (who I can't even call a Hero) Boltac. He is a merchant who could be a combination of any number of stereotypes for shrewd merchants. You never, at any point dislike him though. As the story goes on though, it gets harder not to root for him. I have to mention Relan when talking about characters. Fantastic doesn't begin. He is a perfect foil for Boltac. Logic vs. idealism, logic vs. heroism, logic vs. idiotic bravery (you get the idea).
Pick this up. It is so well worth it.

Great characters and take on the fantasy genre

I really enjoyed this satirical look at the Fantasy genre. It's the Galaxy Quest of fantasy novels. With really endearing characters that are self-aware and engaging. I would very much look forward to more adventures of the merchant adventurer.

Honest and Empowering

This book surprised me with depth and clarity. I thought it might be another self-help, best practices kind of book but right away I realized that I was in for a treat. Craig and Mary are brutally honest about their own flaws and failures in very specific ways which was both enlightening and empowering to me. I identified with many of their stories so I felt like it was super practical. It would be culture changing if enough people read and resonated with their message. I recommend it to anyone who says they don't feel like they have enough hours in the day...

Love Love Love This Book!

Incredibly practical. I so appreciated Craig and Mary's transparency as they guided me through their journey. Their examples helped me see the connection to my own life. But they didn't leave me there...they offered practical steps on how to apply this to my life. Thanks for this great book!

Profound, Fun, & Hopeful

I love the way this book is organized. The short concise sections and acronyms make this a very easy read. That is not to say that the content is light however. Indeed, the information presented to the reader is profound, dare I say life changing material. I enjoyed the fact that the authors have a good sense of humor too. There is a real personality to the writing that makes it a fun read which is a really nice compliment to the serious subject matter. Perhaps the most important quality of "From Hectic To Healthy" is the hope contained within. The Jutilas are quick to point out that no matter how far down you've sunk in your personal life, a new day is just around the corner! This is the kind of hope and motivation people need. In all, I would say this book is a perfect combination of grace and truth, presented in a very unique and readable way! Truly a must read for anyone that wants to get marriage, family, or any important relationship right! The subtitle "The Journey to a Balanced Life" really says it all, and the book delivers on that promise!

Building Bridges of Understanding

I have read two other books in this series, "Year of the Baby" and "Year of the Fortune Cookie." "The Year of the Three Sisters" (the fourth book in this collection) is as sweet, heartwarming and informative as the other two. It unconventionally relays an aspect of adoption through the temporary relocation of Anna's Chinese pen pal, Fan.

This book is about adjusting to differences while building bridges of understanding. The big event is Fan coming to Cincinnati as an exchange student. Multiple issues arise as Fan is welcomed into two different households. Characters deal with insecurities over friends, family and school. My daughter identifies most with strong-willed Andee (another friend of Anna's and a major catalyst in the book). It was good for her to see tensions overcome through honest, open communication and RESPECT.

I loved how Anna's respect for her parents played a major role in bringing a key plan into fruition. I appreciated her ability to show empathy, yet maintain her convictions when making decisions. This book models strength of character and loving concern for others.

In addition to the Chinese phrases/symbols and pronunciations, you get a fascinating glimpse into some less obvious challenges related to being a migrant worker in Beijing. However, unlike the other two books, there was no Chinese food recipe at the end.
