So Many Things I Love about This Book

There are so many things I love about this book. I'll start with the title, a phrase her Chinese-American mother used frequently. I also really liked the cover photograph of tiny Cherylene, the Chinese-American Shirley Temple. I loved the photograph late in the book of Cherylene and her mother that revealed how amazingly alike they looked..

I knew Cherylene and knew she was writing a memoir, but I had recennly lost track of her and was thrilled to see her book was published. I loved this intimate story of her most unusual career development., from child star in musical plays and movies (she danced with Gene Kelly) to student of anthropology to writer of plays. I had only seen a couple of her plays. I saw the second one in Sacramento where I lived. When I talked to her on the phone a week later, I learned that we had both been to oncologists during that week and both had cancer. Mine was stage 2, and soon successfully operated on. Hers was stage 4 and she has been subject to operations, medicines, chemotherary, radiation, and experimental treatments ever since. She has never given up on her writing.

I loved hearing about her immigrant ancestor's son who ran away and joined an Indian tribe. I loved hearing about what it was like to be a member of the Chinese minority and that someone thought Cherylene's story was too much like regular white stories. Not like my story!
Her Chinese-American grandmother sent in an application and became an extra or performer in many movies. Her mother and her dentist father encouraged their children to sing, dance, and act, and there daughters became especially well received in Las Vegas musicals, although all of them switched careers later.

I loved the many details of their lives and especially the close relationship with her mother. I especially liked the chapter where her mother told her she should cherish her own talents and never be jealous of others After the onset of Cherylene's illness, when her mother was in her somewhat forgetful nineties, they traveled abroad together. I loved the clever structure of the memoir, where chapters advancing the story of Cherylene's life alternate with short humorous chapters about their travels.

This is a rare intimate closeup of a mother and daughter together..

This is a surprising and solidly-written memoir by playwright, poet and short story writer Cherylene Lee, focused on the bedrock of Chinese-American culture – family. What makes this an “uncommon” Chinese-American memoir is Ms. Lee’s very uncommon childhood career as a performer on early television shows from the 1950s and 1960s, including Playhouse 90, The Dinah Short Show and The Gene Kelly Spectacular, the last one a variety show in which the five-year-old prodigy danced with one of America’s most beloved hoofers. She went on to play roles in the Los Angeles Philaharmonic’s production of The King and I, on TV series such as Bachelor Father, McHale’s Navy and Dennis the Menace, and in the films Flower Drum Song and the John Ford-directed Donovan’s Reef.

On the surface a book about a young woman learning to deal with having been known as the “Chinese Shirley Temple,” at its core Just Like Really is a powerfully moving mother-daughter story (the title comes from a phrase used by her irrepressibly optimistic mother to express affirmation and approval of her daughters). Lee moves masterfully between childhood adventures on various sets of Hollywood sound studios and lavish Las Vegas stages, and two late-life cruises with her aging and increasingly forgetful mother. Now an accomplished playwright, Lee’s cruise ship dialogues convey the angst of a daughter simultaneously battling cancer and caring for the woman who has unflaggingly supported her through a daunting gauntlet of challenges. Against the backdrop of shopping trips in Dubai and other ports of call and her mother’s passion for onboard gambling, these dialogues reveal the sustaining strength of familial love when it’s given – and taken – in style. This is fine read about fine people.

A "Must" Read!

Your book is so Wonderful! so Amazing! with so many Dimensions! that there are not enough words to describe it! I love the way you alternated scenes from your childhood to adult scenes with your mother - and loved referring to the Chinese Glossary. It was a real window into Chinese-American customs, creating an appreciation of Chinese culture and an understanding and love of your mother for her unique viewpoint, dedication, and skills, as well as your loving patience and protection of her.

It's such a page turner that I was up late last night, reading in bed, about the details of your marriage. I got to p. 279 before the zzzzzz's got to me. What can I say about your engaging writing style, your unbelievable gift for recall, and talent for creating 3-dimensional portraits with words that place your readers right into the scene? When you described "How I learned to cry," it was done with such detail and precision that I was so caught up with the emotions that I also burst out crying! I could go on, but at the least let me say "Congratulations!" on such a Masterful, Extraordinary, accomplishment!!!

~~A trip to the Dentist~~

Josh is 4 and 1/2 years old and this short story tells of his trip to the Dentist - Dr. Gentle. Josh takes along GI Joe to help ease his anxiety. Everyone has told him it is OK to be nervous for this trip of cleaning and X-Rays.

Lots of encouragement in this one. Everyone in the office explains in detail what they are going to do. Linda Sparkle, the hygienist, explains the sink, the water, the bib, and the X-Ray machine. Of course, Dr. Gentle explains what types of candy Josh should avoid in the future. And, don't forget Julie Friendly, the receptionist...

Loved the names of the employees in this one. This book is certain to ease any apprehension(s) that your small children might have concerning the Dentist.

A must have book for young first timers to dentist

This is a great book to help alleviate fears or worries any small child may have about their first trip to the dentist. The characters have very appealing names, I love Julie Friendly and Miss Sparkle especially! The inclusion or real images of dental equipment as photographs along with illustrations is very clever and helps familiarise youngsters with these dental implements so there are no nasty surprises.

First Visit to the Dentist for Kids

No one likes to go to the Dentist and we all fear the unknown. This is a great little book with great illustrations on a child's first visit to the Dentist. We just went through this with my 4 year old grand kids and this book brought up a lot of questions that we were able to address before that first visit.

Highly Recommend for young children.

About the Author
Klaus Engel earned his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Stuttgart. He is a researcher at Siemens Corporate Research, Inc. in Princeton, NJ. Markus Hadwiger earned his PhD in Computer Science from the Vienna University of Technology. He is a senior researcher in the Medical Visualization department at the VRVis Research Center in Vienna, Austria. Joe Kniss earned his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Utah's School of Computing. He investigates volume rendering, volume light transport, human-computer interaction, and image processing at the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute in Salt Lake City, UT. Christof Rezk-Salama earned his PhD from the University of Erlangen, working in the Computer Graphics Group. He is an assistant professor at the Computer Graphics and Multimedia Group of the University of Siegen, Germany. Daniel Weiskopf earned his PhD in Physics from the University of Tubingen, Germany. He is an Assistant Professor of Computing Science and co-director of the Graphics, Usability, and Visualization Lab at Simon Fraser University, Canada.

A very pragmatic book!

While volume graphics have historically been in the realm of scientific visualization, modern GPU's make it possible to render gaseous phenomena such as clouds and fire using true volumetric data in games and simulators at high framerates. Using real-time ray casting to render these objects is quite feasible on modern GPU's, but it's an intimidating-sounding technique.

It really isn't, and this book helps to demystify volumetric rendering using 3D textures, GPU ray-casting, and other techniques. It really isn't hard to understand the concepts; this book presents the math behind it well without going overboard - it's all well-explained.

What's really valuable, however, is all the practical advice stashed in here. If you've experimented with real-time ray casting before, you've likely beaten your head against the wall fighting sampling artifacts, figuring out how to properly add procedural noise to the results, and squeezing enough performance out of your fragment program to not slow down the rest of your scene. If you got past all those hurdles, then you probably gave up when you had to figure out how to deal with intersections between your volume and the rest of your scene, or what to do when the camera goes inside the volume.

This book has chapters on all of those topics, and that's what makes this an invaluable reference for volume graphics that are part of bigger applications. Most of the other research and material on this subject assume you're rendering a single object in isolation, but in a game engine that isn't the case. This book bridges the gap between scientific visualization, games and other visual simulation applications, and finally makes these exciting techniques accessible to a whole new class of applications.

Once it all comes together, the results are truly amazing. You'll find yourself using volume graphics for all sorts of situations and adding an incredible air of reality to your applications as a result. Highly recommended!

Good theory book, not so much programmers' book

This is a great book to learn much of the theory for volume rendering. Though there are some program listings, most are fragments. Some contain pseudo code which makes for a difficult experience when a developer is trying to understand the program let alone the theory.

All in all, still quite a good book with rich theory; color photos and beautiful glossy pages however I would not recommend as a sole source of reading for entry-level volume graphic developers.

If there were many more real time volume graphics books out there, it will be easier to compare.

The book is excellent in covering GPU Real Time Graphics. I wish it would had use CUDA or something else, or see an updated version of the book... that is far as the technology behind it. The concepts are great.

What a great read. I must admit

What a great read. I must admit, I was a little skeptical when I first seen this. I though it was going to be one of those books where the author is doing nothing more then trying to sell some other course or something, without really sharing any good information. Boy was I wrong, This little book is filled with detailed information about how to set up your real estate business using virtual assistants. Brittne Calloway really pulls back the curtain and shows you exactly how she's been so successful in such a short period of time.

Clear & Concise Guide Full of Actionable Tasks - Minus the typical "Guru" Fluff!

I had the pleasure of attending a live workshop yesterday where Brittney spoke about how she was able to scale her real estate business in a ridiculously short amount of time. I picked up one of her books before leaving and said to myself, "I'll read a couple of chapters when I get home tonight." Well..... Once I opened up the book, I did NOT put it down. I actually heard Pringles jingle in my head as I watched rays of sunlight begin to peak through my window while finishing up the last few pages this morning. From cover-to-cover, this book is FULL of ACTIONABLE, MEASURABLE tasks that one could immediately implement to help expand and begin to FULLY automate their real estate business. I'm sure that a few of the tasks she shared have heard before by investors, but having them together all in one place makes it extremely easy for anyone to hit the ground running. It's not a huge book, but what it lacks in length, it definitely makes up in QUALITY.

It's also written in a very simplistic, non "GURU," down-to-earth manner that makes you feel like a she's a close friend who is genuinely trying to help you make a series of small, calculated, yet necessary tweaks in your business to help you achieve MASSIVE SUCCESS. Brittney is extremely transparent in explaining how she was able to rapidly expand her real estate business and does not hold back in sharing countless ways for others to do the same. There were many times while reading the book, I found myself thinking about how I could easily apply the information to other areas of business as well.

One area that I could really relate to is when she discussed NOT being a MORNING PERSON.... Anyone one who knows me knows that (historically) me and mornings just don't get along. But I could clearly see how working towards becoming a morning person could benefit both myself and my business after reading this section. I also loved how she shared her morning routine (and the importance of keeping your morning routine). She also shares her heart of really being FIRST in the business of helping people - regardless of whether or not they would conduct a transaction with her. There were so many things that resonated with me in this book.

Another thing I really loved about the book was that she wasn't "pitching" her course on every other page (as some people do). Yes, she does have a course that she offers, but she only mentions it ONE TIME, and it's at the very end of the book. I'll definitely be implementing the things recommend in the REI Automation Blueprint and I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for ideas of different ways to expand and automate their real estate business.

I bought this book several months ago and I was amazed at how straight and to the point this book is. Brittney lays out step by step from beginning to end what you should do in order to automate your REI business. I implemented the tools, resources, and strategies as I read them and I am having good results with my virtual assistant. I work two jobs 6 days a week 13hrs a day so doing all the cold calling, emailing, social media, and negotiating was overwhelming. I needed a virtual assistant to help me with every aspect of my business. After hiring my virtual assistant, I noticed an increase in production with my business which ultimately lead to me closing my first wholesale deal and making $10K all from applying what I learned in this book. I would recommend this book to anyone who is serious about taking their real estate business to the next level.

The Will to Brevity...

No one can reasonably expect to sum up Nietzche's views and philosophy in under 100 pages. The reader should not go into this work expecting to come out understanding Nietzsche, but maybe make him a little less obscure or receive a slight bit more context in which to read Nietzsche's books. For those who have already read some Nietzsche and are left nonplussed, this tiny book may help you out as well (it did me).
The book follows Nietzsche's publications more or less in chronological order. The longest and most difficult chapter is the one on "The Birth of Tragedy." This work gets the most attention of all of Nietzsche's works, presumably because it is easier to "sum up" or encapsulate than any of his other works. For instance, the section on "The Genealogy of Morals" will leave you wondering what the book is about (in fact, reading the book itself may also have this effect - it's a tad difficult).
"Morality and its Discontents" is one of the most illuminating chapters, and will shed some light on Nietzsche's proclamation that "God is dead" which is probably his most infamous and misunderstood concept (there's also a lot more meat to it than the eternal recurrence and the Ubermensch, which Tanner points out).
Overall I agree with Tanner's assessment of Nietzsche's "Thus Spake Zarathustra." It was the first book of his I read, and I came out of the experience energized, but I had no idea why. "Zarathustra" is a passionate but potentially misleading read. It's nothing like his other works, and introduces concepts that never come up again, though they seem to be of utmost importance in the context of the book (i.e., the eternal recurrence, Ubermensch, and the will to power - at least in his published works).
The pace of Tanner's book quickens and the delineation of Nietzsche's texts becomes more and more sparse towards the final few chapters. There is very little information about Nietzsche's insanity, or Lou Salom� or even the details of his life. The book is almost completely dedicated to Nietzsche's philosophy. In fact, the book ends as abruptly as Nietzsche's own sane life must have. There's a slight feeling of "so what's next?!?" at the end of the last and shortest chapter that discusses the works of 1888 in a flash.
Nietzsche is a huge subject, and his books are thick conceptually if not physically. He was a thinker that wanted to teach us to think differently, which makes him a valuable read no matter what your stance on the views he covers. This minute book will help you peek through the keyhole of this enormous and overwhelming subject.
Lastly, Richard Wagner figures hugely in Nietzsche's work. Knowing more about Wagner will only elucidate some of Nietzsche's works and concepts. Tanner also supports this view.

Grandiloquent Slog

If, like me, you struggle with Nietzsche's almost self-consciously opaque writings, Michael Tanner would like to offer his services as a Virgil to guide you through this particular tangled wood. A noted Nietzsche scholar, Tanner's years of immersion in the field help dispell common myths that have accrued to the Great Man's name. But unfortunately, he often falls prey to the same limitations that make Nietzsche's own books such a tough slog.

Tanner starts with a brief overview of Nietzsche's life. Not much of one, though. Tanner demonstrates little interest in Nietzche as a person, limiting such intrusions to where we absolutely need them to understand his subject's thoughts. Though I tend to see the producer and the product as a piece, Tanner would rather respect Nietzsche himself, who explicitly disagrees.

From there, Tanner moves through the canonical texts, mainly (though not exclusively) in chronological order. His in-depth analyses clarify at least the earliest texts. Tanner is remarkably forthright, pointing out contradictions and elisions that the author evidently missed or ignored in his own work. He even points out places where Nietzsche made points just one time in his early books, then took it for granted that we'd remember his intent for the rest of his career.

But as the subject matter gets more intense, Tanner's writing becomes more elliptical. He lapses into the same grandiloquent academese that makes Nietzsche such tough sledding for lay readers. I can't make heads or tales out of some passages, even after multiple readings. I suspect Tanner can't either, at least on the evidence of a particularly dense paragraph about halfway through, which Tanner concludes by essentially throwing his hands in the air and sighing, "That, at any rate, is how I understand it, and him."

Tanner has simplified certain points about Nietzsche for me. I now understand some of my own reading mistakes, not least my own desire to find through-lines which don't exist, and starting in later books without the prior assumptions Nietzsche expects me to bring from earlier texts. But in terms of actually understanding the conclusions and resolutions I ought to gain from the books, I'm only marginally wiser than when I started out. Perhaps I'm naive, but I expect "A Very Short Introduction" to be more introductory, and less jargon-rich, than this.

Interesting -- but not a good introduction for newcomers to Nietzsche

This brief book on Nietzsche contains many good things, though I'm pretty confident that it is not a very good introduction to his thought. Twenty years ago when I was studying philosophy in grad school I read through most of Nietzsche's works at one time or another and delved fairly deeply into the secondary literature. I picked this up as something of a refresher, but was quite surprised at what a poor job it did at explaining and summarizing what Nietzsche said and why he said it. The book's main interest comes from its analysis of where Nietzsche's thought fails to maintain coherence as well as some misunderstandings of his thought by various scholars. The book is useful as a corrective and at pointing out where Nietzsche sometimes fails to make sense, but this is pretty far down the list of books that I would recommend as an introduction. As such, it is one of my least favorite of the books that I've read in Oxford's Very Short Introduction series.

Even if one thinks that much of what Nietzsche says, however important it may be despite that, ultimately fails to be coherent, it is essential before saying why what he says is wrong, to say as clearly as possible what it is that he does say. The problems become pretty early in the book. The summary of THE BIRTH OF TRAGEDY is patchy and barely explains -- which is what one would expect in an introduction -- the contrast between the Dionysian and the Apollonian. Tanner nicely explains Nietzsche's idea that suffering is the central fact of human existence, but the content of many of his books is left something less than clear. Worst of all, Tanner -- despite in the final section of the book writing that he assumes that everyone will grasp how much he admires Nietzsche -- doesn't make clear why Nietzsche is important. He doesn't explain precisely why Nietzsche is regarded as one of the most important thinkers of the past two centuries.

In short, I do not think that this is a good first book for those wanting to explore Nietzsche's thought. The truth is that while there are several excellent books on Nietzsche, most of these are for people who are already familiar with at least some aspects of his work. There is one book that I would recommend as a first introduction, R. J. Hollingdale's intellectual biography. The problem with that one is that it is only available in a ridiculously high priced paperback (I own what was in the 1980s a very reasonably priced paperback). Hollingdale, Nietzsche's most important translator into English after Kaufmann, writes clearly and sympathetically about Nietzsche. Like Tanner I am not a fan of Walter Kaufmann's famous work on Nietzsche. Like Tanner I am a big fan of Alexander Nehamas's book, but it is definitely not an introductory work. Possibly the best secondary work after Hollingdale to find a way into Nietzsche may be THE CAMBRIDGE COMPANION TO NIETZSCHE. It is not any cheaper than the Hollingdale book, but it is a book not useful exclusively to beginners. I have not read Safranski's biography, but that is a book that I would investigate if I were a beginner. But perhaps the best approach is simply to plow through Nietzsche's books. I think what Tanner suggests about the best way to read THE BIRTH OF TRAGEDY holds true for most (though perhaps not for the late works written during his last year of sanity) of Nietzsche's books: read through quickly the first time to get a sense of the overall shape and form of the book. Then read it through slowly and carefully a second time. Nietzsche is a difficult thinker, not least because he is almost intentionally messy. He makes sudden and surprising transitions apparently unrelated to what has gone before and it is often difficult to grasp what he is talking about. Despite this, he is a brilliant writer, often writing breathtaking passages, with many unforgettable sentences. However one is introduced to his thought, he repays the effort.

Review of The Complete Pug Handbook-

This is a very well rounded book with input from breeders from the UK and throughout the U.S. I like that it has a collection of input from a variety of seasoned breeders. It covers every topic from A to Z on pugs! A MUST have for any pug enthusiast/fancier!!
I also recommend it to breeders as an outstanding reference when placing a puppy..especially to a first time pug owner.
Very happy with how this publication came to fruition and the amount of content that it contains!

Best Pug Handbook so far!!!

This is the most in-dept pug book I have come across. I am a breeder and am very happy to see all advice that is in this book regarding how to find a good breeder and what to look for when searching for a new puppy. This is a very detailed book for people who want to learn as much as possible and gives great advice on potty training. I will be adding this to my go home bags for new parents!!
