The stories about people at the top of their industries for innovation,cultivating talent & hiring practices are interesting.

I purchased this book after watching Sydney Finkelstein in an interview on one of the local Sunday morning business programs. I listened to Mr. Finkelstein speak about the qualities that great innovators and employers have in common and I knew I needed to get the book.

One thing that I found really interesting about Mr. Finkelstein's book is that no matter what industry you work, there are similar qualities in "Superbosses."

Mr. Finkelstein uses real life examples ranging from the newspaper industry, Ralph Lauren, Oracle, and chef's from restaurant's like Chez Panisse to define what a Superboss is and does.

Whether you are looking at the book because you are interested in data and research or you want to be a Superboss this is worth reading.

Mr. Finkelstein doesn't use a lot of jargon and he doesn't use a million big words, he gets to the point and his stories about people he considers at the top of their industries for innovation cultivating talent and hiring practices are very interesting.

This definitely will stay on my bookshelf and be highly recommended.

Employee engagement costs US business over $300 billion annually. Sydney Finkelstein's exceptional book, "SUPERBOSSES: How Exceptional Leaders Master the Flow of Talent", will empower companies and managers to positively impact engagement and the bottom line.

Finkelstein has written over half a dozen books on management and leadership. This will be one of his best contributions.
Peppered with great stories and strategies from in and out of the corporate arena you will be in awe of the similarities and differences.

How do SUPERBOSSES foster a culture of innovation, encourage smart risk- taking, remove obstacles, and drive change? They certainly set the bar high, empower teams, and sometimes eschew conventional leadership practices by staying in the ditches to ensure success. I’d love to see a chapter on how these SUPERBOSSES would score on Emotional Intelligence and Narcissism. It strikes me that it is just a hairpin turn on the road to leadership. Any of these SUPERBOSSES could have been derailed, as Finklelstein’ s classic Why Smart Executives Fail illustrates if they were not able to manage themselves, manage relationships, and eschew the addiction of narcissism and its concomitant blind spots.

"What is the tipping point when someone is extremely confident, competitive, imaginative, authentic, and relentlessly committed to a vision and, as a result, becomes SUPER-SPURNING; not a SUPERBOSS ?"

These bosses might disengage the majority of talent. The litmus test here is not only the profile of the SUPERBOSS, but the profile of, what I might call, the “SUPERPROTEGE”.
For SUPERBOSSES to succeed there must be a cadre of SUPERPROTEGES whose traits include passion, resilience, determination, and ironclad defenses that do not enable the SUPERBOSS to whittle away their healthy self-esteem and drive. SUPERBOSSES cannot succeed unless the followers are passionate, resilient, and determined enough to pursue the gifts these SUPERBOSSES have to offer. The art and science of choosing this talent, it seems, is one of the greatest gifts of the SUPERBOSS.

These questions will certainly be grist for the mill of a prolific researcher, writer, and contributor to the world of leadership and management like Professor Finklelstein. This book is indeed a great example of him as a SUPERBOSS spawning other SUPERBOSSES across a myriad of industries by writing a playbook for them.

Finkelstein is a gifted storyteller. He has an ability to synthesize information and experiences, and pull them into a cogent theory to embrace.

Disappointed

I have read about half of this book. Not too impressed with the concepts or recommendations. I have been CEO of a manufacturing company for 22 years, and was hoping to see examples from industry. There were few, if any. Examples were from a chief in a restaurant, and other types of service organizations. Very few different types of industries were represented, and the same examples were used over and over. Not much was from, or applicable to, industry. The author came out with nasty comments about Donald Trump. I was surprised to see that. The author is obviously a strong liberal with thinking that goes along those lines, and short on what works in typical businesses. I was very disappointed in this book. I have read a huge number of business and management books over the past 22 years, and I would rank this one near the bottom of the pile when ranked from great (top) to useless (bottom).

Much literature is available on network and data security that describes security concepts, but offers so many different solutions to information security problems that it typically overwhelms both the novice and the experienced network administrator. This book presents a simple set of rules important in maintaining good information security. These rules or best practices are intended to be a recipe for setting up network and information security. This manual will take the mystery out of configuring an information security solution and provide a framework which the novice as well as experienced network administrator can follow and adapt to their network and data environment.

George L. Stefanek, Ph.D., has over 18 years of experience as a systems administrator and manager of IS/IT departments. He has also consulted on information security issues for such clients as the U.S. Department of Defense.

Too many mistakes and errors in this book

Security 101 dictates the importance of an effective set of information security policies and procedures. The granddaddy of such books is Information Security Policies Made Easy by Charles Cresson Wood that contains over 1000 well-written security policies.
The importance of best practices for information security is easily understood in the post September 11 era, combined with the fact that more and more companies are connecting their corporate networks to untrusted public networks without the appropriate level of security and protection.
With such a need, Information Security Best Practices: 205 Basic Rules sounded like it could fill such a void. Unfortunately, the book suffers from a number of flaws. First, its organizations is not logical. The book starts chapter 1 with the topic of e-mail spam, while a fundamental topics such as network architecture is not dealt with until chapter 5.
The book contains numerous errors. While some are small, many others were rather significant. Innocuously, the author called the ICSA the NCSA, even though its name was changed over 4 years ago. Incorrectly, the book states the an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) will eliminate power surges along power lines. A UPS will provide protection from power surges, but can't eliminate them. Finally, the book states as a best practice to use halon for fire control, yet halon production was banned under the Clean Air Act of 1994.
The author has significant department of defense experience, which explains why the book would suggest security controls such as C2 and TEMPEST shielding. First off, the C2, from the Orange Book has been retired and replaced by the Common Criteria. Secondly, TEMPEST shielding is far too expensive for most companies, combined with the fact that the there are few individuals who are competent in Tempest technology in the private sector, since the specifics of TEMPEST are still classified.
Those looking for a good reference would be better served by reading Information Security Policies Made Easy or its less expensive cohort Writing Information Security Policies by Scott Barman (New Riders, 2001 ISBN: 157870264X)

This book had a lot of potential, but it has far too many mistakes.
It does not take into consideration corporate best practices.
There are better books out there, use them.

Excellent Book

I thought this book was very easy to read and understand. I must commend the author for making technical material so easy to understand even for a novice like myself. Everything I wanted to know about information security was in this book. I highly recommend it.

lousy text

terrible textbook

I took this course from the university that the author taught at. the book was this textbook. the pedagogy was terrible, some units such as (At/m) were not properly defined, the commentary was minimal except where it was copied from other books. it seems that the auther cannot be bothered to give a thorough explanation of the the basic concepts, and would only add in text as an afterthought. as a practicing professional in the field and as someone who has taught university level courses, I would say, find another textbook

Good basic book of motor/generators

If you need an engineering introduction into generators, motors, transformers, and the likes this book is good. The illustrations not only show simplistic diagrams but actual machines one will find in the job. Has solved examples and end of chapter questions. Covers a lot of ground but delivers the concepts well.

Reads like a cookbook, not an engineering textbook!

I've just finished a university course with this book as the reference, and it's not been a happy experience. The author has a poor grasp of the concept of grammar-checking, and doesn't follow his own standards (sometimes including the imaginary "i"/"j" in formulas and sometimes leaving it out).

But the biggest problem is, the author makes no attempt to get the reader/student to understand WHY and HOW machine behavior is derived. Instead of deriving any equations (via KCL/KVL), PC Sen lists the equations as-is and expects you to memorize them.

Unfortunately, this is an engineering course and not English Lit: engineers need explanations and mathematics, not a "plug the variable in here and substitute to determine the answer" book.

Throughout the course the professor would have to point out inconstencies in the formulas provided and direct students to alternative online references as a substitute for this poor book's pitiful attempt at explaining power electronics to readers.
