About the Author
Fritz Kohl served in the U-boats during the Second World War and then trained as a technical draughtsman. His reconstructions of builder's drawings led to collaboration with Eberhard Rossler, probably the world's leading authority on the history of German submarine development.

An excellent reference on the important Typ XXI U-Boot, written by authors with substantial knowledge and authority on the subject. Although the 'Wilhelm Bauer' remains the only restored and complete specimen of the Typ XXI class, the fact that there are still three others trapped under that collapsed cocrete U-boat pen roof (that are partly exposed at low-tide) is exciting news indeed! One of these days, perhaps further efforts will be made to reclaim them for possible restoration and/or display. I think you'll like this book very much! The schematic drawings and engineering diagrams of the boatplan are superb.

I really recommend this book for those looking for a detailed description of the Type XXI U-boat. There is plenty of amazing and accurate scale drawings that allows us to understand the high technology available at the moment to build a ship like this. The amount of detail on the drawings is overwelming. You will be able to pass hours and hours looking at the scaled and measured drawings and learn something new every time you resume on reading the book. The drawings will allow you to make a superb model of this ship. I think that this book is what all books related to military technology shoud be. The authors had been professionals in researching and presenting the subject. A must for all interested on submersibles and submarines...

A must have for any Type XXI model

I bought this book to help with a cut away model of a Type XXI that I am currently building. I only have one other of the "Anatomy of the Ship" series: "Type VII U-Boat" so I didn't have any expectations of the book format. Although it may differ from their normal layout, it has everything I need. And a lot more.
To help with the layout and accuracy, I find this book indispensable. The photos and drawings are excellent, especially helpful since the instructions with the model (Revell #05078) are a little off.
I have built five other sub models and have 16 other books on submarines: primarily U-boats. I feel that the "Type XXI U-Boat" was a necessary addition to my collection. Well worth the money. Glad I bought it.

About the Author

Chenming Calvin Hu holds the TSMC Distinguished Professor Chair of Microelectronics at University of California, Berkeley.� He is a member of the US Academy of Engineering and a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. From 2001 to 2004, he was the Chief Technology Officer of TSMC. A Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), he has been honored with the Jack Morton Award in1997 for his research on transistor reliability, the Solid State Circuits Award in 2002 for co-developing the first international standard transistor model for circuit simulation, and the Jun-ichi Nishizawa Medal in 2009 for exceptional contributions to device physics and scaling. He has supervised over 60 Ph.D. student theses, published 800 technical articles, and received more than 100 US patents. His other honors include Sigma Xi Moni Ferst Award, R&D 100 Award, and UC Berkeley’s highest award for teaching — the Berkeley Distinguished Teaching Award.

Clear and Concise

This book was used as a reference in an excellent course I took on solid state devices as an undergraduate about two years ago. I will admit that I don't sit down and read things all the way through as much as I should (I tend to take the stochastic approach to reading), but this book was a rare exception where I found myself interested enough to just sit and read on the train more than what was required for class. It doesn't contain as many examples or exercises as other books I've used in my studies. However, I consider this to be to its merit, since its density makes it easy to find the important stuff (because it's all important stuff!).

To give you an idea of what's covered, these are the chapters (since it isn't already listed on this page):
