Great Resource for Families

As someone who does best with my health when I keep a journal, I was excited to see the books that are being published by MemoryMinder. In addition, having worked with children for almost 40 years, I was impressed to see DietMinder JUNIOR. I requested a review copy because I work with a wonderful group of children in an after-school book club called ABC Reviewers. I wanted to get their opinions about DietMinder JUNIOR.

The children were impressed that the book is spiral bound, and feels like a real book. They liked the fact that it is printed in color. The first few pages teach the food groups and give examples of one serving portions, along with having the kids make a daily goal for each food group. Personally, I felt the layout of the food groups was easy for the children to understand both the food groups and portion sizes. The kids could easily handle the daily exercise goal page independently. They also felt that the way to keep track of daily intake was very doable.

As both a teacher and a parent, I feel that DietMinder JUNIOR is a great tool to help children become health conscious. The parent/teacher information helps the adult(s) in a child's life to do the necessary teaching and modeling to get "the program" going for the child. I'm thinking if someone had this tool when I was growing up, I just might have had more success in my health journey. Most children would need a caring adult to be an encourager along the way in using the DietMinder JUNIOR. It makes a great tool for a family project of learning to see food and exercise in a positive way.

I decided to try a DietMinder JUNIOR with my 6 year oldgranddaughter. It worked great & was a fun teaching tool!

My main intent was to help her learn about food groups and portion sizes. The importance of drinking more water instead of extra juice or her milk substitute was the other thing I wanted to emphasize. (She already has a healthy diet because of food allergies.)

Even though the book is based on USDA guidelines, I customized our use due to the fact she has special eating needs with her allergies. A person could be as selective as you want to for your individual child in regards to carbohydrates, fat, protein, etc.

She was excited when I showed her the book... she loved the bright colors! I explained what we were going to do, showed her the pages she would be writing on, helped her understand what we were aiming for, and then helped her make choices & set her goals.

What a fun teaching time... she loved it! She was excited to do the addition at the end of the day to see how well she did. We discussed her daily exercise sections, and learned that she needed to improve in that area also. This book is a cute, fun way to teach kids about the basics.

Early Start to Good Health

DietMinder Junior is perfect for elementary and middle grade kids. It is informative and interactive. The book provides basic nutrition facts in an easy to understand format and encourages exercise as part of a child's daily routine. Kids can set personal eating and exercise goals and track their progress. The format is easy to understand and can be used independently or as part of a group project. Kids can monitor themselves and evaluate their own progress. Food groups, mixed food, and measurements are presented throughout the book. There is a second section of the book for parents and teachers with information and suggestions of how to create and support healthy eating and exercise habits for children. Illustrations are colorful and inviting. Well done!
