A Mystery Book with British Class

What a great book to start the summer reading season. The plot was easy to follow and moved along at a brisk pace. The sprinkling of British words and phrases gives a neat charm to the book. The characters and locale came to life with lots of descriptive detail. In fact, the book begs for a visit to the beautiful Yorkshire countryside and a chance to see the Post Office and other plot venues. Can’t wait for the next book by PK!

A true page turner!

"The Beneficiaries" is a true page-turner. This mystery unfolding in a quiet corner of England and centered around a high caliber art theft, captivates you right from the start. Taylor uses a hetero-diegetic narrator who is not part of the story world. This allows the narrator to write from multiple points-of-view which has come to be the norm in modern-day mystery writing.
What makes this tale so strong is the authenticity and splendid coloring of a growing net of characters who first get entangled involuntarily into the fast paced story, but later come to benefit from their entanglement, hence the novel's title. The beneficiaries are everyday, rural folks, all with their own idiosyncrasies and problems to solve, and a main beneficiary intruding into this provincial world from the outside, the more worldly Boston. The reader cannot but sympathize with his and the others' success in avoiding the traps the sleuths of Scotland Yard lay for them.
Unlike the brilliant 19th and 20th century Sherlock Holmes or Hercule Poirot, Detective Sergeant Patterson and Detective Collins come across as rather dull despite their sly and persistent manoeuvres to catch the thieves. The sympathy of the narrator definitely does not lie with the sleuths and police force, but with the beneficiaries of the illegal art transactions they got drawn into.
At the end, the reader feels wanting more, perhaps a sequel centered around another noteworthy art piece on this side of the Atlantic, Manet's "Le Repos" in the RISD art museum in Providence, RI.? With collector Conrad Rankin's inherited compulsive desire to own the most exquisite objects in the world, and a retired sleuth who has a second life working for an art insurance firm, a sequel feels almost natural, indeed compelling! I can't wait to read it.

Exhilarating!!

What a page turner!! A sharp right hand bend in the road in a driving pursuit with another car begins a web of deceit that seemingly has no hope of reconciliation. Valuable artwork tossed out the back of the moving vehicle falls to the ground and scatters. Challenges in recovery of the six world-famous paintings pulls the reader along on a fast paced wild ride with many unexpected twists and turns along the way. P.K. Taylor's, The Beneficiaries, is compelling as it graphically illustrates Jeremy's initial misstep, and ensuing panic as he realizes that there is little hope of turning back to correct it. The author renders a rapidly unfolding masterpiece of intrigue from beginning to end. A who-done-what-to-who thriller!
