About the Author
Eric B. Shiraev is a professor and researcher at George Mason University. He received his PhD in political psychology from St Petersburg University, Russia, and completed a post-doctoral program at University of California, Los Angeles. He has extensive teaching and research experience at a number of distinguished universities both in the United States and abroad. Shiraev is the author, co-author, and/or co-editor of fourteen books and numerous publications in the fields of cross-cultural psychology, political psychology, and comparative studies. In addition to his teaching and scholarly pursuits, he also writes opinion essays for think-tanks, nongovernment organizations, and the media. Shiraev’s research interests include: history of science, comparative history of psychology, cross-cultural psychology, historical theories of abnormal behavior, political psychology, folk beliefs, scientific foundations of spirituality, and psychology of social adjustment and immigration.

A History of Psychology: An informative textbook for all uses

The second edition of A History of Psychology is much more attractive than the first edition. It has a very attractive cover, the text and cover is printed in color, and this edition is easy to read; i.e., either as a resource, for use as a textbook, or as a book to study from cover to cover. A student can use the "Check Your Knowledge" sections to highlight the many key points while studying which proved significant while reading the textbook, as in the prior edition. The many additional notes from the website are also helpful for study.
There are numerous examples of fascinating text in the textbook. A few are described below: At the end of Chapter 1, the author offers his idea of what psychology was in the beginning and how it has changed to date. He says that "pessimists emphasize psychology's fragmentation and are likely to look at its history as a sequence if incomplete theories" (p. 27). He goes on to say that critics then find weaknesses in the enthusiastic supporters' initial theories. This rollercoaster-like concept continues until the subject topic becomes a strong and diverse knowledge which is psychology today. In Chapter 6, examples of how mental illness was treated throughout the years were highlighted through physicians' ideas of treatment. Many of these treatments did not work and some patients were used as "guinea pigs" for research into providing a more effective cure for symptoms. Finally, in Chapter 7, the text highlights the start of behaviorism and John Watson's theory of human behavior, as based on animal behavior. A fascinating section offers Watson's own ideas of mental illness and why it occurs.
As I stated in my first review, I would consider it an honor to use this book for teaching. Additionally, having read this edition and compared it to the textbook used when Professor Shiraev taught the subject a few years ago at George Mason University, I found this book to be more informative and globally oriented which contributes to my knowledge of the subject.

Excellent book and would highly recommend

The book is very well-written and is quite enjoyable to read. The book approaches the history of psychology in a tremendously clever and readable way that it synthesis the interdisciplinary understanding of the history of psychology. The lessons throughout the book are excellent and students seem to really get a lot out of them. Moreover, I was very pleased to see that the book took a good look at non-Western practices - avoiding the overly Eurocentric view of other textbooks. Overall, the book deserves five stars for its well researched, well written and excellently designed text. I look forward to future editions!

Great Book!

This is an excellent book! It approaches the topic from a multidisciplinary lens, incorporating elements of history, liberal arts, and science, which makes it so interesting and engaging. It emphasizes diversity and gives weight to both Western and non-Western traditions and philosophies, presenting psychology as a global discipline. In my opinion, this book is very accessible and thorough, with a multitude of case examples and outside resources provided. Great book!
